Law Professor: "Shameful to support men and women who have gone overseas to kill other human beings."
Whenever people ask me why I initially quit law school to volunteer to go to Afghanistan as an Infantryman, I only half-jokingly tell them I preferred sleeping on the ground and looking for the Taliban to being around the pretentious jackasses one finds at law schools from time to time. When I got back, the first article I read in the Law School newsletter was about how the first year of law school is the hardest year anyone could ever have, Well sure, except almost every year that our men and women spend in the military. In law school you generally get fed fairly regularly, don't get shot at, and don't have to pull radio guard at 2 a,m, This isn't exactly a newsflash, but there is nothing inherently difficult about attending classes and reading books. I'm not saying that to degrade higher education, but comparing it to dodging 7.62 rounds is a bit....hyperbolic.
And then along comes someone who proves my point with far more alacrity than I could muster on my own. Everyone, meet Professor Michael Avery:
The email may have been brief, but with it Suffolk Law Professor Michael Avery seems to have poured salt into the wounds of quite a few Americans, including some students at his own school.
In the five-paragraph e-mail to colleagues in response to a school-wide appeal for care packages for deployed soldiers, Avery calls the notion of sending packages “shameful”.
"I think it is shameful that it is perceived as legitimate to solicit in an academic institution for support for men and women who have gone overseas to kill other human beings" wrote Avery.
Local professor: Collecting care packages for troops is 'shameful': MyFoxBOSTON.com
For some more on this guy, you can go to the "Above the Law" blog where the writer just skewers this clown.
Somewhat ironically, the very first person to wish me a Happy Veterans Day was a buddy of mine who just happens to be a Suffolk Law Graduate. The school is going with the old stand-by of "he has a right to say what he wants."
In the long history of Suffolk University, we have embraced discourse within the framework of the Constitution and Bill of Rights. We encourage free discussion; yet remain uncompromising in confronting acts of discrimination. As Suffolk's history shows, all of this can be done while supporting our mission to provide access to excellence in education to those who deserve it, not the least of whom are active duty military personnel and returning veterans, who by their brave acts have honored each of us and our nation.
Indubitably true. He also has the right to pee on an electric fence or inhale Clorox, but it doesn't make it either sensible or reflect well on the schook.
The whole thing did segue nicely with an article in the Washington Post this morning though:
The troops are lavished with praise for their sacrifices. But the praise comes with a price, service members say. The public increasingly acts as if it feels sorry for those in uniform.
“We aren’t victims at all,” said Brig. Gen. Sean B. MacFarland, who commanded troops in Iraq and will soon leave for Afghanistan. “But it seems that the only way that some can be supportive is to cast us in the role of hapless souls.”
The topic is a sensitive one for military leaders, who do not want to appear ungrateful or at odds with the public they serve. They also realize that the anger that returning troops faced in the latter years of the Vietnam War was far worse.
As a result, most of the conversations about pity take place quietly and privately among combat veterans. After his two sons returned from combat tours with the Marines, retired Col. Mark Cancian warned them that people outside the military would view their service from two perspectives.
All things being equal, if I had to chose between being back in law school, being pitied for my service in the military, or serving as an infantryman again, the choice would be easy, and I would be singing this diddy tomorrow as the sun set:
Up in the morning out of the rack
Greeted at dawn with an early attack
First Sergeant Rushes me off to chow
But I don’t eat it any how
Oh hail Oh Hail oh Infantry
Queen of Battle follow me
An airborne ranger’s life for me
Cause nothing in this world is free
Pick up your rifle and follow me.
In a big bird up in the sky,
all will jump and some will die
Off to battle we will go,
to live or die, hell I don’t know
Oh hail oh hail oh infantry
Queen of battle follow me
I look to the sky I have no fear,
My Ranger God is always near.
Oh hail Oh hail oh infantry
Queen of battle follow me

The professor has the right to speak his mind but its a shame he is a moron who doesn't know or doesn't appreciate who protects him....His world could change in a nanosecond. A bright orange cloud over New York City and he would be begging for a gun.

Law Professor: "Shameful to support men and women who have gone
Very refreshing! After 32 years in uniform I sometimes look at fellow citizens and say "Who ARE you? And why have I been defending YOU?" But there are always 5% who just don't get it. Some of them are very helpful by self-identifying. After all, a professor is someone who teaches. Have we learned nothing from this professor? His rationale for why people go to SWA is merely ignorance. I say Hallelujah that he is free to spout, in English, his belief in his ignorance. And I say Bravo to the the student of law who so neatly staked the dude on the anthill of public opinion.

Such morons have the right to free speech but not a right to avoid the consequences of their words. Only the government can violate 1st amendment rights. Employers are free to fire someone for their comments. Such liberals frequently praise terrorists as 'freedom fighters' but quickly denounce servicemembers of democratic countries. Michael Avery's Offensive Comment
What is shameful his comment. I find it unconscionable that a man with his education is stupid enough to publicly articulate the opinion he did in reference to the “care packages for military personnel”. His utterances are an insult to this nation. In contrast, he should be grateful that persons are willing to go defend this nation, thereby giving those like him the opportunity to make such offensive comments.

Law Professor: "Shameful to support military men and women"
I am a former combat Marine of the Viet Nam War and served as a civilian adviser attached to the U.S. Military and other coalition troops in Afghanistan (2006-2008). I have been wounded twice and lost many friends to the horrors of warfare (during and after combat).
Indeed, every American citizen has the freedom of speech as long as that speech is not inflammatory to the point of inciting a riot or inciting a normal prudent person to commit violence. Thank God we still have such freedoms in our country. I defy that same professor or any other professor to visit Afghanistan or Iraq and voice the same opinion against the Afghanistan military or Afghanistan National Police. I am afraid he would be arrested, beaten severely, and stoned to death by the general populous while the Afghan Police and Afghan Army stood by; cheering the menacing crowd to kill the defiant infidel from America. I have no doubt that same professor would cry out for help from the same U.S. military personnel he previously slandered and condemned for faithfully carrying out the duties to America they had sworn to uphold. It is a shame we do not have more loyal citizens who are willing to put their life on the line in behalf of the fools in this country who feel they should provide such emotional, misdirected responses to a common cause for the good. I have no doubt, this same professor supports better treatment for inmates in every prison in the country to make sure that they receive air conditioned cells, three, well-balanced meals a day, and comfortable beds in which to sleep. Ironically, our troops in Afghanistan, Iraq, and every previous war have never been afforded such luxuries.
I too feel shame Mr. Michael Avery, but not for the same reason. I feel shame that you have attempted to rely on your influence as a professor to sway the opinions of our young men and women in support of a warped, frustrated man. I feel shame, because I too teach for a university and realize that my students will naturally categorize all professors as staunch supporters of such warped sense of reality. Those of us who are in positions of authority and influence must be held to a higher standard...a standard that holds us responsible for our actions and our speech. Of course that is just my opinion.
Thanks for listening.

I don't support his right to teach half grown minds or to espouse such a shameful opinion in the classroom. It is a personal political opinion that is not only misguided but also treasonous. Law Professor hasn't got a clue of the real world killers
All I have to say that our young heroes today have to put up waiting for a command to engage an enemy while incoming is hitting all around them and they cannot trust their counterparts as they enter into enemy territory. This professor or should I say professional student stayed in school as a coward would. This guy is probably in Hanoi Jane's fan club while we were up to our hips in rice paddies trying to stop the VC and NVA from killing his colleagues(the educators) in Vietnam. We were just baby killers as far as his type were concerned. He should see what tyrant regimes do to their own countrymen which American Sons, Daughters, Mothers, and Fathers sacrifice their lives and their families peace of mind. Also, without our children and grandchildren being in schools you would not have a job. Enough said since he is a professor he should get the point.

My Two Cents...
This guy (Avery) is a jackass...aside from being studious enough to pass a bar and pretentious enough to get a job as a law professor, probably hasn't done too much*. If he were truly wise, his opinion would reflect that war is, quite simply but popularly eluding, a symptom of failed diplomacy**. And while servicemen believe that, while flawed, our country and system is better than any other to date. And that, while that may be the reason they are there (to protect way of life, family), they are imminently protecting their brethren next to them, who have also honorably chosen the same.
Our country showed wisdom and restraint in absolving from WWII (until Lend-Lease (political)...and
imminent threat (security)...but when we entered, the country understood that it was for a cause
of defense (one of our tenants), and the country reinforced.
Vietnam*** was different. We entered as an (est.) 8-week opposition to a communist action, and left as a disarrayed country after a decade of war (familiar?). While initially supportive, our country spit on the soldiers instead of the politicians and champions that they should have...lessons learned (I hope). At least, so far, our populous is supportive...but rhetoric like Avery's is as dangerous as an uncontainable fatal virus.

This man should be happy that the military members volunteered to endure whatever obstacles and dangers to give him the freedom to say that without fear. I spent twenty years in the snow in Germany and Korea, cleaning up hydrogen bomb test sights in the south pacific, living in the desert. Also what I thought was the hardest is long separations and low pay straining a family. If you were one of the few that stayed married, god bless. Don't be mad but feel sorry and prey for him because he would not be able to survive that life. If he he ever read the bible, he would know that the bible talks about wars and the time to fight is mentioned.

Show me his DD-214. Show me his GI bill eligibility documents. show me his VA claim number show me his Law Degree. If he has the first three .....he can say whatever he wants.....with the knowledge gained from getting all the first three..... the fourth one is what the first three have insured. If he only has the fourth one....his grade is 25.... out of a possible 100! and obviously a FAIL!

Out of touch Professor
I think we should send the Professor overseas with the same supplies our troops get BUT NOT anything extra sent to troops from our generous citizens to help give them a "taste of home" plus items they do not get or get enough to last. Thank God for charities and my favorite, "MooreMart" out of New Hampshire.

Care Package
Chuck, maybe you will find yourself in a situation that some vigilante would just do us all a favor and put a Cap in the back of your head.

Professor Michael Avery Comments
This professor is a little mixed up. Our troops are sworn to obey their Commander-in-Chief, the President of the US. He is the one that decides to kill people and send troops to do it. Not our loved ones who risk their lives for the US.

Professor Avery
When I was in the Army I had no choice about where I was sent and I don't think that is any different today. I was and they are the instrument of the American People.
The American People elect their representitives and those same decide the policy of the nation with regard to defense.
We can disagree but the way decisions are made is at the ballot box and we all agree, as a social contract, that we will abide by the laws and hold the correct people responsible for the acts of the American people through their government.
We should resent people who buy the government because that subverts the social contract and it puts the men and women of the military not in the hands of the America People but in the hands of those who have the money to subvert the process.
Either way, the American soldier is doing his/her duty and their job.
To blame the instrument is stupid!. To blame the person aiming the instrument is correct but takes courage. The question is whether America has the courage to discipline those who have bought off the referees and corrupted the process.
