Law Professor: "Shameful to support men and women who have gone overseas to kill other human beings."

Whenever people ask me why I initially quit law school to volunteer to go to Afghanistan as an Infantryman, I only half-jokingly tell them I preferred sleeping on the ground and looking for the Taliban to being around the pretentious jackasses one finds at law schools from time to time.  When I got back, the first article I read in the Law School newsletter was about how the first year of law school is the hardest year anyone could ever have,  Well sure, except almost every year that our men and women spend in the military.  In law school you generally get fed fairly regularly, don't get shot at, and don't have to pull radio guard at 2 a,m,  This isn't exactly a newsflash, but there is nothing inherently difficult about attending classes and reading books.  I'm not saying that to degrade higher education, but comparing it to dodging 7.62 rounds is a bit....hyperbolic.

And then along comes someone who proves my point with far more alacrity than I could muster on my own.  Everyone, meet Professor Michael Avery:

The email may have been brief, but with it Suffolk Law Professor Michael Avery seems to have poured salt into the wounds of quite a few Americans, including some students at his own school.

In the five-paragraph e-mail to colleagues in response to a school-wide appeal for care packages for deployed soldiers, Avery calls the notion of sending packages “shameful”.

"I think it is shameful that it is perceived as legitimate to solicit in an academic institution for support for men and women who have gone overseas to kill other human beings" wrote Avery.

Local professor: Collecting care packages for troops is 'shameful': MyFoxBOSTON.com

For some more on this guy, you can go to the "Above the Law" blog where the writer just skewers this clown.

Somewhat ironically, the very first person to wish me a Happy Veterans Day was a buddy of mine who just happens to be a Suffolk Law Graduate.  The school is going with the old stand-by of "he has a right to say what he wants."

In the long history of Suffolk University, we have embraced discourse within the framework of the Constitution and Bill of Rights. We encourage free discussion; yet remain uncompromising in confronting acts of discrimination. As Suffolk's history shows, all of this can be done while supporting our mission to provide access to excellence in education to those who deserve it, not the least of whom are active duty military personnel and returning veterans, who by their brave acts have honored each of us and our nation.

Indubitably true. He also has the right to pee on an electric fence or inhale Clorox, but it doesn't make it either sensible or reflect well on the schook.

The whole thing did segue nicely with an article in the Washington Post this morning though:

The troops are lavished with praise for their sacrifices. But the praise comes with a price, service members say. The public increasingly acts as if it feels sorry for those in uniform.

“We aren’t victims at all,” said Brig. Gen. Sean B. MacFarland, who commanded troops in Iraq and will soon leave for Afghanistan. “But it seems that the only way that some can be supportive is to cast us in the role of hapless souls.”

The topic is a sensitive one for military leaders, who do not want to appear ungrateful or at odds with the public they serve. They also realize that the anger that returning troops faced in the latter years of the Vietnam War was far worse.

As a result, most of the conversations about pity take place quietly and privately among combat veterans. After his two sons returned from combat tours with the Marines, retired Col. Mark Cancian warned them that people outside the military would view their service from two perspectives.

All things being equal, if I had to chose between being back in law school, being pitied for my service in the military, or serving as an infantryman again, the choice would be easy, and I would be singing this diddy tomorrow as the sun set:

Up in the morning out of the rack
Greeted at dawn with an early attack

First Sergeant Rushes me off to chow
But I don’t eat it any how

Oh hail Oh Hail oh Infantry
Queen of Battle follow me

An airborne ranger’s life for me
Cause nothing in this world is free

Pick up your rifle and follow me.

In a big bird up in the sky,
all will jump and some will die

Off to battle we will go,
to live or die, hell I don’t know

Oh hail oh hail oh infantry
Queen of battle follow me

I look to the sky I have no fear,
My Ranger God is always near.

Oh hail Oh hail oh infantry
Queen of battle follow me

Tell him how you feel directly. I did. Here is his email address from the college's website. mavery@suffolk.edu

Having spent a lifetime in Law Enforcement, after Viet Nam, I've found that Professors like this exist in a lot of our Law Schools and the rest of higher education for that matter. The fact that this idiot just returned from Cuba where he bashed America in front of Castro and his bunch tells me he is more Communist than American. Isn't it interesting that he screams "free speech" under a Constitution held in place by the blood of others. I'd like to know what he's contributed to this Country other that hate. Isn't it nice to know that when you send your kid to college they have idiots like this to twist their thinking? And then we wonder why we get the reaction from youngsters.

I agree 200%. I spent 28 years in a green uniform. My three children all joined the Army. My Two boys each did two tours in Iraq. My daughter was a Korean Linguist. Her husband is still on active duty and is at Ft. Meade. Our youngest got selected for Special Forces.
My Dad reired as a Maj. and is now 95 years old. WWII, Korean and Vietnam Vet. Ask him what he thinks. This man and write a book.
Yes, I'm proud to be an American wish the whole country was.
Remember if you read in English thank a teacher if you speek English thank all of our Military.
In God We Trust.

I hope his family is in the first wave hit when they let loose on our soil again. Maybe he'll understand then... Sorry, I forgot he's a socialist college professor. Arrogant, and simple minded, yet superbly skilled in ruining America. Never served anyone but his own unrightfully inflated ego.

I agree, the professor's comment is inappropriate and concur he is in desperate need for an attitude adjustment. The above inappropriate comment not in keeping with the ideals of the American Legion's Preamble, which members recite at the beginning of official meetings, concerning a charge of treason against the President of the United States and "Commander in Chief" of the armed services is out of order on an American Legion page. If the President committed an act of treason actions would be occuring to remove him from office. Two wrongs don't make a right.

This educator definately needs an education. How does he think he got the right to say this without getting his butt kicked. Makes me sick but only in America can someone like this use his right to free speech.

The people who give him the right to abuse his position of authority and spread this un-American banter are the people getting those care packages. Thanks to Professor Ignorant for proving the sacrifice of the men and women in uniform is working to defend his right to be wrong out loud.

My first inclination was anger at such an incredibly NOT well thought out statement. I'm one of those who believe in defending our way of life. We tried to stay out of the World Wars and got smacked for our "head in the sand" position to world politics. Talking and not fighting is for two who are willing to talk and not fight. It is a simple as Kill or be killed. This guy is in the same league as Jane Fonda.

What is a real shame is that an ignoramus like you gets to live and work in freedom paid for by real "Americans",,,,,,I think you are a disgusting individual residing in your little liberal palace paid for by others. If the stuff hits the fan I'm sure you'll be behind us,,,,,,,,,,,,,WAY BEHIND US !!

With a heavy amount of ptsd, (combat, wounded, gov't mistakes causing the war to last years longer than it should have (and killing President Kennedy, as well as John Lennon), I wonder if there is a lawyer who would consider suing this ignorant person an/or the institute who is paying him, for slander, contributing to my psychological problems from Vietnam, and a list of other criminal complaints I now have against him. I would also like to force him to read every one of the 58,000 names on 'The Wall'. Not sure if I could get thru the first 10 names myself.....it would kill me

He looks about the age of someone from Vietnam. Wonder if this jackass skipped the draft and had no problem staying home to get his degree, while others bled so he can spew his crap. He probably would represent the enemy.

You mean like President Bush?

I love it when the Bill of Rights, the Constitution and all that I served for is alive and well... The Professor is dead wrong, but we all would be much worse off if he couldn't speak his mind and I couldn't disagree with him.

I am a vietnam vet & I wished I had the support of the american people while I was over there. But now it don't mean nothing. As to this Professor of Law his ideas are his own & he can kept them. But when he is teaching other people his opinon will reflect in his classes & this should stop. I say to hell with him. & long Live THE MILITARY WHO PROTECT ARE WAY OF LIFE>

FIRST LET ME SAY "SEMPER FI" I SEPENT MUCH TIME IN VIET NAM FIGHTING FOR MY COUNTRY, AND YOU PROFESSOR AVERY CAN SPREAK YOUR MIND MUCH LIKE JANE FONDA AND JOHN CARY DID, YOUR RIGHT TO FREE SPEEDH SHAMES YOUR COUNTRY, AND BORDERS ON TREASON, YOU HAVE DISGRACED THE HEROIC MEN SERVING THEIR COUNTRY

This man calls his self an American? I have to agree with Captain David W. This is a disgrace to all who served is serving and died so this (so called educated man) could have the right to sit back in his warm or cool office and critize our troops. What is this country coming to?

Don't call him a professor since he doesn't have a clue how he got to where he is!!! If it wasn't for the fighting AMERICAN he would be pulling weeds in Germany or dead!!! The American Soldier has sacrificed so you can live your seniority life and it appears you have gotten to where you are because of college and/or universities protecting your butt because it couldn't be from teaching "common sense" . Why don't you find another country where they don't fight wars for FREEDOM!!!

How does it go;If you can read this thank a teacher. If you read it in english thank a vet

I agree with Capt David W's comments almost entirely. I feel that not only is this professor an embarrassment to the American public, but to his school and the position he holds in our society. The "Commander in Chief can be replaced Nov 2012, but the professor is probably assured of a paycheck as long as he wishes to teach.

good 4 u professor, u can speak u r mind, now go and teach in Afgan

Not really sure that I can let this "windbag" get under my skin. Fact is that maybe he will suffer the same fate others have suffered that spoke out against the military. Until they have been there and done that, they won't understand. I know in Iraq care packages were morale builders and they continue to be just that. I find myself faced with yet another deployment to Afghanistan soon and will go without hesitation. If my family continues to send care packages to the unit, I think they know we will all be grateful as we should. Its too bad that this professor assumes he knows the overall mission that we face, it is to his dismay that he is apparently too narrow minded to do his own homework.

Nicely said Sgt. Rickert. God bless you for your service. I pray for your protection and for your family and their sacrifice.

Got his right to an opinion. I was a 21 year career military member and am a disabled vet. We have fought wars since 1776 for our rights and freedoms so even this jerk can have his. I would drop kick him out of a helicopter into Afghanistan and see how he is treated by the Taliban for just being an American who is also an educator, where being both is frowned on by the Taliban. Bet he'd scream for those who hunt and kill other human beings to save his behind.

If men and women did not go to war when they were called on. If they did not kill the enemy, there would be no America today. I do believe the professor has the right to say what he did. In this country everyone has a right to make an ass of themselves.

I AGREE WITH THIS IDIOT 100 AND 50 %, OUR SOLDIERS SHOULD STAY HERE AND DO THEIR JOB ON THIS IDIOT!!!!!! I am joking of course but idiots like this make me ashame to be an American. Why? Because so much has been given by so many in the past for fools like this to make statements like he makes and to me it belittles all they have done. He has no idea (educated man!!!) of what all we (Milatary people) have done, and the saddest part is he (and others like him) never will understand because they never had to give something up for others. They like Mr. I'm sorry OBAMA can really talk good for the homeless, unemployed and people who need help. But where are they when it comes time to share their wealth, are you crazy they worked hard for that A$$HOLES

It is amazing the he uses the freedom that troops sent overseas to "kill protected for him. Is he also aginst the fact our troops help build and protect schools? As the saying goes, If he dosn't want to stand behind our troops he's welcome to stand in from of them.

I too believe it was shameful for them to go over seas - after all they could have stayed here and shot dickweeds like this guy!

STOP! STOP! PLEASE EVERYONE, STOP! MY EYES ARE BLEEDING!!
I am so sick and tired of these pansy-wansy, liberal mommy's spawn barfing up the first amendment, that I want to hurl nails.
Granted that these illegitimate spawn have the right to their own filth with license to call it free speech. Even some smeg of the same dna strand have said that there are some insulting and offensive actions that also come under the class called free speech. As far as I'm concerned none of these should have any rights until they understand what rights are.
Rights come with responsibilities. If you can't have one you should not be allowed the other. The responsibility dictates that you don't exercise your free speech off the nose of another.
You have the right to believe that one race is the inferior of another, but you don't have the right to put that into practice.
You have the right to carry a pair of scissors, but responsibility dictates that you don't run with them.
Mr. Avery decries the support of the troops as shameful, while our imitation commander-in-cheap calls himself a Christian, then makes an open mockery of the Bible. He fired General McCrystal for exercising his right to free speech, and then insults our closest ally in the middle east by agreeing that he is disingenuous and can't be trusted.
Both of these actions are irresponsible misuse of the right of free speech, and both of these people should be terminated from their positions and sent to basic American civics classes. Maybe then they can start over.

Stupid, stupid,stupid.

Get back on your meds, bro.

I don't consider Al-Qaeda to be human beings. They reap what they sow. We're the ones tasked by Congress to eliminate this threat. We do it to protect our citizens - even the dear professor above - and to keep these terrorists from operating here. End of story...

It's a sad commentary on our academic institutions in our country that such attitudes are much too common in the Ivory Tower. The most egregious point committed here is that Avery seems to hold each individual service member personally responsible for the situation in which they find themselves and therefore are unworthy of support. If you have a political beef, Avery, take it up with your Representative. To maintain his position while simultaneously holding teaching credentials is a blight on the law school. Is it any wonder that more and more Americans are coming to realize they are getting ripped off by our institutions of "higher" learning?

It is the right of a 'Commander in Chief' to fire a general at will. President Truman with MacArthur as a prime example. May our 'Commander and Chief' carry on. with no termination of office.

Agreed on all counts, John. Some folks seem to have their heads so far up their *politics* that they can't give the man credit for his excellence in defending our country (Osama bin Laden, anyone?). And it's hard to see how anyone can call themselves a patriot and then speak with absolute disdain of the First Amendment. I would love it if some of these folks would refer to the Constitution for the definition of "treason" prior to calling everyone they disagree with a traitor.

As it is I firmly believe we're way too nice to our enemies -- the rules of engagement should be scrapped -- if they fire at us from a mosque .... blow up the mosque -- if a village supports our enemies .... clear the village then obliterate it. And I would make that "Piled higher and Deeper" [aka PhD] serve a tour or 2!
Love or leave it -- kill them all, let God sort them out!

If brains were snoot, you couldn't blow out a snooting bugger; let a alone a dry one!

You are disgusting and have feeling and emotions like a rock! Got to China and North Korea if you don't like America!

Perhaps the good Professor would prefer that we send food packages to the Muslim Jihadists instead. His opinion of Americans is skewed and we are apparently all just a bunch of cold blooded killers.

When a person is here to kill other human beings is really wrong and should not be put on blast and it should not be honored for the true reasons. We will really show the ways to make penis larger so we can see the truth in people in the world we live in now. I am from california and we love to see the burnpit.us because it rocks were for sure.

Every time I read something like this from a so called educated person, the more I'm glad I dropped out of school.

The Philosopher HERACLITUS:

The Greek Philosopher "HERACLITUS" once said "MUCH KNOWLEDGE DOES NOT TEACH WISDOM"

The Nazis would rule the world today ! Mr. Idiot.

mr avery should remember where he got the right to speak like a blooming idiot that he is.what a a__ hole.

As one who received some of the packages in question I cant relate men and women serving their country .The packages werte welcome and reminded me of oh so far away. Now I am glad the professer has a right to speack his thoughts but the afore men and women are giving it to him, maybe he should keep his mouth shut. GOD BLESS AMERICA

Thank you and all other G.I.s for protecting me, my family, my country!

Book smart don't equal street smart!

Street smart don't equal right.

Good work Michael Avery, your argument is just solid and built of pure champion stuff.

The only reason u r still living is because of the MILITARY..I loved every care package i got..go play russian roulette with a 45

I think he should go over to Iraq and see what would happen to him. I agree with the vets this man/attorney should shut his mouth. Does that mean the men who served in WWI and WWII or the Korean war or Vietnam war are killers. No they are hero's men and women who built this country strong. Maybe we should deport him.
